Slovenia hidden gems and places of interest — 71 handpicked locations with GPS coordinates

Complete travel guide to Slovenia. Handpicked places including waterfalls, mountain roads, thermal springs, UNESCO sites, scenic drives and hidden gems. All with GPS coordinates.

Blejsko jezero (Bled-søen) — Lake, Gorenjska, Slovenia

The water is so still the mountains reflect perfectly. In the middle sits a tiny island with a white church — and on the cliff above, a medieval castle watches over it all. You row out in a pletna boat, ring the wishing bell and eat kremšnita cake on the shore afterwards. Slovenia's postcard.

GPS: 46.3639, 14.0938

Postojna-hulen — Cave, Notranjska, Slovenia

An underground train takes you 3.7 km into the mountain. Stalactites like chandeliers hang from the ceiling, and in the deepest chamber lives the blind cave proteus — a salamander that lives for 100 years. The air is 10°C year round. Bring a jacket.

GPS: 45.7827, 14.2039

Škocjan-hulerne — UNESCO Cave, Karst, Slovenia

You hear the Reka river roaring 150 metres below as you cross a narrow bridge over the underground canyon. The chambers are so enormous a cathedral tower could stand upright inside. UNESCO World Heritage — and one of the most overwhelming experiences in Europe.

GPS: 45.6621, 13.9845

Ljubljana gammelby — Historic city, Centralslovenien, Slovenia

The cafés along the Ljubljanica river smell of coffee and freshly baked burek. Art Nouveau façades in pastel colours reflect in the still water, and Plečnik's Triple Bridge connects past and present with three elegant arches. Europe's greenest capital — car-free since 2007.

GPS: 46.0515, 14.5059

Triglav Nationalpark — National Park, Juliske Alper, Slovenia

Slovenia's only national park fills a quarter of the Julian Alps. The Triglav summit at 2,864 metres is the nation's symbol — it appears on the flag. Emerald rivers, alpine meadows with wild orchids and rock walls rising straight up. You feel the altitude in every breath.

GPS: 46.3566, 13.8367

Piran — Coastal town, Primorska, Slovenia

Narrow alleys between Venetian palaces, red tile roofs rolling towards the sea and an oval square named after the violinist Tartini. Slovenia's 46 km coastline is short — but Piran uses every single metre. The evening sun from St George's church on top turns the entire bay orange.

GPS: 45.5278, 13.5706

Predjama-slottet — Cave castle, Notranjska, Slovenia

A white castle grows directly from a 123-metre cliff face — as if someone pressed a fortress into the mountain's open mouth. Behind the walls hides a cave with secret tunnels. The knight Erasmus held out here for a full year against a siege. Slovenia's most surreal sight.

GPS: 45.8155, 14.1267

Soča-floden — River, Juliske Alper, Slovenia

The water is so intensely emerald green it seems impossible. The Velika Korita gorge squeezes the Soča river between white limestone cliffs — 15-metre-deep pools of turquoise crystal. Ice cold even in August. You catch your breath and jump in anyway.

GPS: 46.3384, 13.6462

Bohinjsøen — Lake, Juliske Alper, Slovenia

The mountains reflect so perfectly in the lake's flat surface you cannot tell where water ends and sky begins. No hotels along the shore, no jet skis, no noise — just the bell from the little stone church at the eastern end. Slovenia's quietest place and Bled's untouched big brother.

GPS: 46.2787, 13.8868

Vršič-passet — Mountain road, Juliske Alper, Slovenia

50 numbered cobblestone bends up to 1,611 metres. The car crawls through dense spruce forest, passes a Russian war cemetery and suddenly breaks into open alpine landscape — then the valley opens towards the turquoise Soča below. Arms tremble on the wheel, eyes refuse to close.

GPS: 46.4854, 13.7871

Vintgar-kløften — Gorge, Gorenjska, Slovenia

A 1.6 km wooden walkway floats above emerald-green water between vertical rock walls. The Radovna river has carved the gorge 150 metres deep, and at the end awaits the Šum waterfall spreading across the entire width. The planks vibrate under your feet from the force below.

GPS: 46.3927, 14.0865

Slap Savica — Waterfall, Juliske Alper, Slovenia

Water springs from a dark cave and falls freely 78 metres into an emerald-green pool. The path up is 553 steps on steel stairs bolted into the cliff face — your pulse rises with every step. Below, the Sava Bohinjka river begins its journey to the Danube and the Black Sea.

GPS: 46.2928, 13.7964

Slap Boka — Waterfall, Soča-dalen, Slovenia

Slovenia's highest waterfall plunges 144 metres in two leaps — and you can see it directly from the road without taking a single step. In spring when the meltwater thunders, it is 18 metres wide and the sight is overwhelming. In late summer it is a thin silver thread against the rock.

GPS: 46.3222, 13.4816

Slap Kozjak — Waterfall, Soča-dalen, Slovenia

A narrow path leads you into a half-open cave — and there the waterfall hangs like a curtain before a perfectly round, emerald-green pool. Moss-covered rock walls curve around you like a cathedral of stone and water. Light falls from above. You forget you are in Slovenia. You forget everything.

GPS: 46.2591, 13.5904

Peričnik — Waterfall, Juliske Alper, Slovenia

A path leads you behind the water curtain — you see the world through 52 metres of falling water. The spray hits your face, the sound thunders in your chest and light breaks into a thousand droplets before you. One of the few waterfalls in Europe you can walk behind.

GPS: 46.4392, 13.8935

Logarska dolina — Valley, Štajerska, Slovenia

A 7 km glacial valley surrounded by 2,000-metre peaks rising like walls on both sides. Rinka waterfall plunges 90 metres to the valley floor, and lonely mountain farms are scattered among alpine meadows. The silence is so deep you hear your own footsteps echo.

GPS: 46.3992, 14.6327

Mangart-passet — Mountain road, Gorenjska, Slovenia

Slovenia's highest mountain road winds up to 2,055 metres through raw limestone landscape. The road is narrow, rough and without guardrails — and the views over Triglav, the Soča valley and the Italian Dolomites are worth every nerve-wracking moment. From the saddle it is a 45-minute climb to Mangart's summit at 2,679 metres.

GPS: 46.4445, 13.6468

Tolminska korita — Gorge, Juliske Alper, Slovenia

The lowest and deepest point in Triglav National Park. Emerald-green water has carved into the limestone for thousands of years — the gorge is so narrow that sunlight only reaches the bottom a few hours a day. Devil's Bridge hangs 60 metres above the Tolminka river. Take a deep breath and look down.

GPS: 46.2455, 13.5792

Velika Planina — Alpine village, Gorenjska, Slovenia

63 traditional shepherd huts cluster on a plateau at 1,600 metres — Europe's largest preserved shepherd settlement. June to September, herders live here milking cows and making heart-shaped trnič cheese over open fire. The cable car lifts you up in 7 minutes, but you feel like you have travelled 200 years back.

GPS: 46.3038, 14.6260

Zelenci — Nature reserve, Gorenjska, Slovenia

A spring so clear you see every grain of sand on the bottom. Water bubbles up from underground into a perfectly emerald-green pool surrounded by marshy meadow and snow-capped mountains. GPS: 46.4926, 13.7412
