Mary Queen of Scots was born here, and James V died here of grief when he heard of the defeat at Solway Moss. The palace burned in 1746 when Cumberland troops bivouacked here on the way to Culloden. Today the ruin is dramatic -- the empty window frames cut the sky like tapestry edges.
