Drive from Newtownards town centre up Scrabo Road — a three-minute drive to the car park at the summit. The hill is a volcanic basalt plateau, and the tower was erected in 1857 by local farmers and landowners as a monument to Charles Vane, 3rd Marquess of Londonderry, who had provided relief during the Great Famine of the 1840s. Architects Charles Lanyon and W.H. Lynn designed it in Scottish Baronial style using sandstone from the Scrabo quarry directly below.The tower is 41 metres tall, and from the top — 122 steps up a narrow spiral staircase — the panorama opens across all of eastern Northern Ireland. Strangford Lough spreads southwards with its drumlins like green cushions in the water. The Ards Peninsula stretches like an arm into the Irish Sea. To the north you see Belfast Lough and Cave Hill, and on clear days you can make out the Galloway coast in Scotland. The tower is free to climb when open (weekends and bank holidays April–September). Scrabo Country Park around the hill has woodland trails and the old quarry with visible fossils.
